I found this article to relate to our current discussion about processed foods and how there are hidden ingredients within these foods. The article, “You Won’t Believe How Much Processed Food Americans Eat”, gives an example about how a product can claim it is sugar free but it only ended up being replaced with artificial sweeteners. This ordeal relates to the topic about processed cheese within the book, “Pandora’s Lunchbox”. The cheese industry has taken the actual cheese within the product and switched it with milk concentrate.
This discussion brings up the debate about how there is no true, wholesome foods out in the store. Additives are used to replace natural content and to add vitamins that were stripped away in processing. This article also talks about how eating less processed and more fresh foods will provide a person with better health benefits. This relates to the study in “Pandora’s Lunchbox”, when participants were split between eating processed foods and “whole” food. The participants eating the processed foods had a slower metabolic rate than the participants eating the “whole” food. This exemplifies the concept that there are sugars hidden in foods that we regard as healthy foods and it is a struggle for people to avoid these processed food; they are cheaper, tastier, and everywhere. |
